Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land Quick Help

Basic Gameplay

The game is a turn based strategy. The aim is to finish each mission and this is done by completing all of the objectives in each. To review the objectives, press the portrait image in the top-right of the screen. You also need to keep the key Investigators alive. You have between 3 and 6 Investigators in each mission. Each Investigator can move and act as many times as they like until all of their Action Points (AP) are expended. Once you have run out of Action Points for all your Investigators or have done all you wish to do in a level, press the End Turn button (bottom-right) and this begins the enemy turn.

Gameplay Help

Help information in this game can be displayed at any point by pressing the ‘?‘ button. The game also has a tutorial we strongly recommend completing (‘Basic Training’ in the front-end) and help pages in the front-end (Game Guides > Field Manual).

Controls

  • Selecting an Investigator: Tap/click on any unit to select it.
  • Movement: Once an Investigator is selected, tapping/clicking on a square gives the Action Point cost of moving there. Tap or click on the same square a second time and the Investigator will move there.
  • Attacking: Once an Investigator is selected, touch/click then hold on a unit to attack it. This will bring up the Action Bar. This tells you the Action Point cost, HIT% and Damage of the attack. The attack can be improved by allocating more Action Points to the attack by tapping the Aim button. Press the tick button to confirm the attack, or the cross to cancel it. If the tick is greyed out then your selected unit is either out of range, out of line-of-sight or does not have enough Action Points for the selected attack.
  • Supporting Actions (Using First Aid, Psychoanalysis etc.): Friendly units can assist one another when standing next to each other. To perform an action select the unit with the item you wish to use, then hold tap/click on the recipient unit to perform an action. Press the tick button to confirm the action or the cross to cancel it. If the tick is greyed out then the selected unit cannot perform the action because either it does not have enough Action Points or the target unit is already on full Hit Points (HP) or Sanity (SAN).
  • Navigating the Screen: Use touch/click-and-drag to scroll the camera around the mission area and rotate camera buttons (see below) to change the view. There is also a pinch-zoom (or using the mouse wheel on PC) to help you select things.
  • Skills: To use any object in the game, it is a combination of a skill and item.  For example, to shoot a shotgun your Investigator needs that item equipped (such as a Winchester) – then the skill% for the Shotgun skill combined with that particular weapon (and the range) give a HIT%.  The ‘Cthulhu Mythos’ skill is used for casting spells (which come later in the game) and the Psychoanalysis skill, combined with a Psychology book, allows one Investigator to restore some Sanity (or SAN, also later in the game..) to another.
  • Buying and Selling Items (in the Quatermaster): To buy an item,  tap/click the space in your Investigators inventory you want the item to go to, then touch/click and hold the item you want to buy and it will then purchase it.  If there is already an item in your Investigators slot, it will automatically sell that item as it buys the new item.  Note that to buy you need to make sure you have the money ($) to pay for an object.  Also note that you are buy like for like, as in you can only buy a weapon from the Quartermaster to go into the weapon slot of an Investigator.  Same for Equipment and Armor – they can only be purchased to go into a Equipment or Armor slot respectively.  For example you can’t buy a weapon to go into an equipment slot.  Press the help button ‘?‘ to find out more (press same button to remove this help text).  If you only want to sell an item; tap/click the item you are selling and the touch/click and hold the sell icon in the Quartermaster’s side of the screen (bottom-right of the item icons).

HUD Guide

This is a quick guide to the game’s HUD:

A – End Turn button.
B – Swap button – when two or more units are next to each other, they can exchange items using this.
C – Rotate camera buttons – use these to help you navigate the 3D game-space.
D – Unit portrait – Tap/click to open objectives box.
E- Character Sheet – Tap/click to open full stats inc. weapons and equipment for a unit.
F – Unit weapons – Upper weapon is the one equipped. Tap/click to rotate the weapon equipped.
G – Unit equipment – Upper item is the one equipped. Tap/click to rotate the item equipped.
H  – Unit armour – removes this amount of HP damage from each attack.
I – Help toggle – in any screen, this button brings up the help information.
J – Speed toggle – Tap/click to speed up the game movements and animations.
K – Pause menu – Tap/click to exit the game, replay from last turn or replay from last objective. If you quit a game, it is saved from the end of the last turn.

I bought this game last night and I enjoy it very much. I did the first mission, and learned the rope.

I have only one problem. I haven’t figured out how to buy more stuff. I tried to buy some med kits in between mission 1 and 2, and I can’t figure out how to add them to the investigators inventory.

I’m sure I just overlooked something, but can you help. Thanks a lot for a great turn based squad game (my favorite kind of game) that is set in a great universe.

    • Tomas says:

Hi Jean, You tap the space in your Investigators inventory you want the item to go to, then touch and hold the item you want to buy and it will then buy it. If there is already an item in your Investigators slot, it will sell that item as it buys the new item. Note that to buy you need to make sure you have the money to pay for an object. Press the help button ‘?’ to find out more (same button to remove the help text).

      Thanks

    Hi,

I am having problems attacking. In the Basic Training, I move the unit as required, end turn, select my unit, then select Target A… when I do so I then see Target A’s info, but holding or tapping on the target doesn’t do anything.

    What am I doing wrong?

    • Tomas says:

Hi Mick. I think you need to end the turn to re-set the Action Points (AP) of your units. After moving you don’t have enough action points to then attack too. The end turn button is the bottom-right button. Once this is done, select your unit then touch and hold the enemy and the Action bar will appear. Thanks.

      • Mick says:

That works on my iPhone. On my iPad, however, all that happens is I end up selecting the enemy unit… the “tap & hold” never brings up the action bar regardless of how many AP I have….

      • Tomas says:

Hi Mick. That’s not a bug we’ve seen. Can you send us a bug report so we can have a look? When you iPad is connected to wifi, can you run the game and from the front end select ‘Options’ then ‘Report Bug’ and in the email this builds can you note that it is an iPad (is it 1 or 2?) and the problem? Please ensure the attachments are with it before you send it. That would be a great help,

        Thanks

        Tomas

    • Al says:

I am having the Same Problem here! IPad 1st Gen. Cannot select an Enemy Unit to bring up the attack Mode, Even though At the beginning of my Turn and Full AP!

  3. Jean Robert Bourdage says:

Suggestion: a mini map with a compass would be really helpful, in a future upgrade.

  4. Mick says:

I sent a bug report, but I have a bug with the bug report that it didn’t create any attatchemnts in the mail….

    • Tomas says:

If you are not using a good wifi connection at the time of the bug report, so it saves the email in the outbox, it can loose the attachments sometimes. We appreciate the effort you are going to either way.

  5. Rob says:

I am also Having the same difficulty as mick

  6. Nyarlathotep says:

    Great atmosphere, poor UI.
How dó you use a spellbook? The “Heat of Gandeth” to be precise.

    • Tomas says:

Hi there. You equip the book so it is the uppermost item on the UI. Then (assuming you are using version 1.1 or later) touch and hold on a target (as it still needs one to manifest) and then the Action Bar should appear. Once this particular spell is cast, it will effect all enemy units. Thanks

      • Nyarlathotep says:

Many thanks for the quick response time on this forum!

      • baljet says:

Heat of gandeth only seems to affect a single target for a few points of damage, is this working as intended?

      • Tomas says:

If memory serves me right, that is the one you can use to heal at a distance,so very helpful as other means need to you be next to the patient.

      • Baljet says:

        Hiya,

Heat of Gandeth: The caster materialises damage to all enemies on the battlefield. Costs 15-35 SAN to cast.

From the text, low damage and high AP and SAN cost I assumed that would be 6 damage to all active enemy units on cast; but it only affects a single target. If I’m mistaken I’d suggest updating the text in the description to read: “to an enemy on the battlefield”.

Think I’ll be replacing it with Bane of Nyogth or Venom of Azeth for now.

On a vaguely related note: any chance of a storage slot or two for storing spells such as these that are no longer available in the quatermaster after a couple of missions?

Many thanks for this utterly amazing game and for monitoring the feedback!

  7. David P says:

Hi. When a character goes manic do they automatically fall unconscious the next turn? Also, is there any other way to regenerate SAN points other than psychoanalysis? For example, do they regenerate each turn you are not attacked?

    • Tomas says:

There is a 50/50 change a unit without SAN will go manic or get paralysed. If Manic then yes, they always go unconscious afterwards (unless you use psychology before). SAN is restored either by the psychology skill and book or after going manic or getting paralysed. Thanks

  8. Derpy says:

Can you use the Book of Hysteria on yourself? Doesn’t seem to be working for me.

  9. elwyn5150 says:

I’m frustrated by the really terrible aim of my characters even at point blank range. Is it worth restarting from scratch and just leveling up on their best weapons or should I focus their training on spells?

I’d be great if there was someway to restart the level and reassign attributes.

  10. Jarrod says:

How the h@#% do you use small vitality jabs. You NEVER bother to explain it anywhere is the game. Lame!

  11. Scepticon says:

I’m liking the game (though I think I died about five times on the first mission. I can’t seem to pick up the extra first aid kits, what’s the deal – I bet it’s something simple.

  12. JonT says:

In the tutorial section where you call in artillery, it mentions Target C. I can’t figure out where Target C is, can you clue me in? (iPad 2)

  13. Kris says:

Hi There, I bought extra armor for my guys, but now with the armor and combination of elephant rifle, he can no longer actually take a shot. Can I drop the armor or somehow get rid of it? Otherwise my guy is useless.
