The madness is in the mountains. Cthulhu has been called. The Lurker is in the threshold. The critically acclaimed ‘Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land’ is now out on PC via the Intel AppUp℠ program at a price point of $4.99/€4.09/£3.50. The Intel AppUpSM center is a service that aggregates, curates and distributes validated digital content delivering a fuller, richer experience on the PC.

The game has launched today on the AppUp center globally in time for RPC Germany international RPG event on the 5th and 6th May. The games developers are at the event taking new gamers through their first steps to insanity. The Intel AppUpSM center is free to install and the PC version of the game runs in widescreen and has been optimised to run on laptops, Ultrabooks and desktops including support for Windows 7 touchscreen powered PCs.

In the vault of an ancient church, the battle for humanity’s souls plays out…

The PC version has been supported by the Intel AppUpSM developer program which means the release today has been translated into German, French, Italian and Spanish. Sanatoriums and asylums worldwide have been put on notice to expect an increased demand.

Mustard Gas and Mythos – twin terrors found in the Wasted Land

If you are new to this cult title, it is an indie turn-based strategy RPG inspired by the works of pulp horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. The game was developed in co-operation with Chaosium, the publishers of the cult horror role playing game, Call of Cthulhu. The game features nine 3D levels set in the trenches of World War One. In ‘The Wasted Land‘ the player uses their team of investigators to uncover a deadly inhuman conspiracy underlying the Great War. Barbed wire, mustard gas and machines guns will prove to be the least dangerous thing that the investigators will encounter as they venture out into No-man’s Land to solve the mystery of the Wasted Land. As the game progresses, the player can build up the skills, weapons and equipment of their team. Key to the game is Sanity; the investigators must guard their minds against the myriad horrors that threaten to send them into the mouth of madness. Just a heads up. I was so excited about the PC offering of The Wasted Land and immediately went to AppUps downloaded both it, then bought and downloaded the game. And have been unable to play it yet. I am getting an error message from AppUp when I try to launch the game that says I have a corrupt or out-dated version of AppUp even though it’s not. I have been conversing with both AppUp and Sony (my PC provider) but none of the proffered solutions has worked yet. I am going insane. I hope I’m the only one stuck in this bit of cyber-space where the geometry is just a little off..

Intel AppUp is not available for Vista – Is there any other chance to play your game? the presentation at RPC made me hot on this game…

I played Fallout 1 and 2 and later when I see Diablo I’m thinking why didn’t the Fallout guys just use that style of play. It’s basically the same minus the turn based mechanic. That is better, and until programmers realize this, we’ll be plagued by games like this one or fallout 1/2. I like Fallout3 but I wish Fallout 3 had been like Diablo 2, much like the new Marvel Heroes MMO. Chaosium, THAT is what you need, a game like marvel heroes but for CoC, and yes Dark Corners of the Earth (much like a Fallout 3 style approach) was wonderful. I loved it and especially think the insanity aspect and sheer scariness of it worked very well. My wife and kids loved watching me play and is among the best games I’ve ever played due to the immersion of the setting. I enjoy new games like Fallout New Vegas and have played a little of Skyrim, imagine a CoC like that, or like the ‘diablo’ style, either would be awesome. Let games like the turn based on die for the dinosaur crap that they are, stop inflicting bad games on us.
