First ‘Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land’ Screenshots Released

Indie developer Red Wasp Design today released the first screenshots from their anticipated upcoming game, Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land’. These screenshots are taken from the Standard Definition (SD) iPhone version of the game and are, the developer says, a work in progress. A High Definition (HD) version will follow.  They show characters from the game under attack by the undead and Dark Young. As the characters fight these legions of horror they will have their sanity eroded away as the game’s designer Tomas Rawlings noted, “Lovecraft and his peers created really iconic monsters that tap into our deepest fears. As huge fans of his stories, we’ve worked really hard to transfer the essence of these alien horrors into a game form. We’re blending the core ideas of the classic role-playing game along with our experience of gameplay design all wrapped in our new 3D engine to craft what we hope is a gaming experience of malignant evil!”

Announced in May this year and set to launch initially on iPhone and iPod (both SD and HD versions), Red Wasp Design plan to infect other platforms such as iPad, Android, PC and consoles with their World War One themed turn-based strategy horror. The game has been developed in co-operation with Chaosium, the purveyors of the cult horror role playing game based on Lovecraft’s work, Call of Cthulhu. The much loved RPG marks it’s 30th year of publication this year, which Chaosium has been celebrating with the launch of a limited edition release of Call of Cthulhu. Dustin Wright from Chaosium said, “We’re very excited to be working with Red Wasp Design to bring the Call of Cthulhu world to gaming devices. It’s a great time to be a fan of H.P. Lovecraft gaming.”

A final release date, pricing and other information has yet to be announced by Red Wasp Design, but you can be kept in the loop via Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/redwaspdesign), Twitter (@redwaspdesign) and on their site (http://www.redwaspdesign.com)

This looks awesome. Great graphics and all. Can feel my sanity dribbling out my ears. 🙂

  2. Tomas says:

    Thanks David! (;,;)

  3. Tim Taylor says:

i’m really, really quite excited about this. you guys are making a game in my favorite genre based on works by one of my favorite authors. this is kind of a geek dream come true.

  4. Tomas says:

Thanks, we’ll do our best to deliver….

A few (well started as a ‘few’ and became so much more) questions if you have time and can answer (as some may be spoilers potentially?) Tomas:
    – Can one enter buildings? (ie. a new level inside to explore?)
    – In combat, for initiative, is it one side then the other or is it based on dexterity and other factors (ie weapon type)?
    – Is there cover? (if you or enemy are in a trench and are shot at)
    – Any details on how sanity will work? If you get to 0 do you join the ranks of the Deep ones & Dark Young? 🙂
    – How big is the environment? multiple areas and more or?
    – Is there an overhead map that one explores and then opens up areas as they do it?
    – Do you get missions/quests to go on from the military or other factions? (for that matter are there other factions?
    – Types of quests?
-Treasure. I assume weapons and such, recover sanity? Any word on how many weapon types are available? Mauser machine pistol ‘Broomhandle’ is my fav. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauser_C96 🙂
    – Can allied and axis join against the indomitable threat? 🙂
    – I noticed there was a ‘spell power bonus’. Any tidbits on how spells work? (do PCs lose sanity to cast? Learn from tomes and quests?)
    – Is this early/late WW1 or a specific year or is that not set or relevant?
    – Do you need a tester? 🙂 If so sign me up! Have the iPad, the iPhone and android devices.

    Thanks very much!

      Hi David,

In answer to your questions (sorry about the delay…)

      – Can one enter buildings? (ie. a new level inside to explore?)
Currently you don’t enter buildings, each level is a set layout.

      – In combat, for initiative, is it one side then the other or is it based on dexterity and other factors (ie weapon type)?
Combat turn orders are based on which side is using overwatch then who’s turn it is.

      – Is there cover? (if you or enemy are in a trench and are shot at)
      Yes there is cover.

      – Any details on how sanity will work? If you get to 0 do you join the ranks of the Deep ones & Dark Young?
Sanity is more dynamic than in CoC, as in it goes up and down more, see: https://redwaspdesign.wordpress.com/2011/06/16/sanity-in-the-wasted-land/

      – How big is the environment? multiple areas and more or?
The level size in the video we released is the sort of sizes the levels are (but they vary)

      – Is there an overhead map that one explores and then opens up areas as they do it?
There is no overhead map, its all done in the ingame environment.

      – Do you get missions/quests to go on from the military or other factions? (for that matter are there other factions?
      – Types of quests?

The game is a single adventure – my hope is that we can use the same game engine to release other adventures.

-Treasure. I assume weapons and such, recover sanity? Any word on how many weapon types are available? Mauser machine pistol ‘Broomhandle’ is my fav.
You get money from destroying enemy units and completing missions which you can spend on weapons, armor, equipment, spells etc.
The Mauser is in the game 😉 (Along with lots of other kit, we’re still tweaking the total numbers…)

      – Can allied and axis join against the indomitable threat?
The idea behind the adventure is that while it starts in World War One, it quickly becomes a bigger war the players are fighting…

      – I noticed there was a ‘spell power bonus’. Any tidbits on how spells work? (do PCs lose sanity to cast? Learn from tomes and quests?)
There is more on magic here: https://redwaspdesign.wordpress.com/2011/07/14/magic-in-call-of-cthulhu-the-wasted-land/

      – Is this early/late WW1 or a specific year or is that not set or relevant?
The game is set in 1915

Do you need a tester? If so sign me up! Have the iPad, the iPhone and android devices.
